Braving the Organic Market

Changing Shopping Habits Post-Supermarket

Organic markets may be overlooked as viable alternatives to large grocery stores, but the average consumer has a lot to gain by checking them out.

Just as healthy eating and cooking at home can be difficult habits to adopt, abandoning the supermarket for smaller local organic markets can be a hard sell for many Americans. In a society of consumers, we are used to choice. A wide selection and a large number of available products, even if many of them only differ in packaging, is both comfortable and expected. Because of this expectation, the first trip into your local organic market can be a shock.

Your first thought may be, why would anyone give up the selection and variety of products found at the neighborhood grocery store? Like many things in the consumer market, grocery stores have grown over the years into giant box-stores with aisles and aisles of goods. Many products that frequent supermarket shelves are unnecessary and unhealthy. Once you recognize what is a part of a healthy diet and what isn’t, all that selection and size of supermarkets becomes less important. The staples of healthy eating are readily available at smaller markets.

Buying organic is not as expensive as we are led to believe. Sorting through the common pitfalls for buying food is an important skill regardless of where you shop. With ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ being trendy, consumers should not be easily swayed by labels, but instead plan ahead and avoid prepared foods - which are more expensive at any store. You will be surprised by how smaller markets can provide what you want and what you need, without having to wade through so much of what you don’t.

Some of us may frequent the same grocery store regularly, but with such a large number of people rushing through their shopping every day, most shoppers are anonymous faces. Organic markets have more personality and familiarity than supermarkets allow, with high employee turn-over. Instead of rushing through the essential task of buying food, small markets provide you with a friendly ambiance that many of us forget (or have never experienced) in the age of big-box stores. The experience can be pleasant and eye-opening.

Some of us may have already explored the organic products section in supermarkets with curiosity. Perusing the products in a small organic market opens a whole new world of possibilities. The average consumer may not know where the products they buy come from or that safer, healthier, and more sustainable products are even available. A trip to the organic market can educate and motivate you to learn more about many topics, including sustainable agriculture, natural personal care products, green cleaning, and superior alternatives to everyday products we take for granted.

Don’t be afraid to change your habits if the possibility exists that you may find organic markets provide great products and a more stimulating experience. Organic markets are no less convenient and provide a variety of products. They are becoming more accessible as the popularity of organic and natural alternatives increases. You may just find everything you need with the added personal satisfaction that you are doing something positive for your family, your community, and the earth.
