Herbal Pick n Mix

Select one or all of the ingredients from the lists for your hair color and type. Most of the herbs can be grown easily at home or bought fresh from the supermarket. The conditioner will be more potent if using fresh herbs but if not available dried ingredients can be found at most well stocked health food shops. If you want your hair to smell super lovely add a few drops of essential oil to the finished infusion. Try rose for dry hair or lavender for oily and combination hair.

  • Blond - camomile, nettle leaf, turmeric, quassia bark
  • Red - ginger, sage, red hibiscus petals, marigold, juniper berries
  • Brunette - marjoram, parsley, cinnamon, cloves
  • Very Dark Hair - Lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme, elder leaves
  • Dry Hair - Elderflowers, comfrey, sage, rose petals
  • Oily Hair - Mint, lavender, lemon balm

How to Make Natural Beauty Hair Conditioner

  • large teapot with lid
  • 30g of selected herbs/roots/bark per 1pint of water
  • large jar or jug
  • wooden spoon
  • muslin/linen square & rubber band
  • sieve
  • coffee filter paper
  • a few drops of selected essential oil

  1. Using only healthy leaves gather your selected herbs and wash thoroughly. The youngest leaves closest to the flower are the most potent. Any flower heads used should be cut just after opening and collected over a tray to prevent bruising by handling.
  2. Warm the pot before adding all of the herbal ingredients. Boil the water (filtered works best) and stand for 30 seconds before pouring in. Stir well with wooden spoon and place the lid on firmly to prevent volatile oils escaping.
  3. Leave to stand until tepid for at least 30 minutes and then strain first through a sieve and then again through a coffee filter paper into a glass jar or jug.
  4. Add a few drops of essential oil if required and cover securely with muslin/linen square.
  5. Cool before using on clean wet hair or store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
How to use

Shampoo hair with a mild herbal shampoo and rinse thoroughly. With your head over a bowl to catch the excess liquid, pour the cooled conditioner through your hair. Pour the contents of the bowl back into the jug and repeat rinse as many times as you can. Blot hair with a towel before gently untangling wet hair with fingers first. Finish combing with a wide tooth comb and be careful not to pull the hair. Leave your hair to dry naturally and style.

Results

Whether you use as a regular conditioner or as a special treat your hair will feel, look and smell gorgeous. Natural beauty is low cost but by making use of the right herbs the results achieved can be as satisfying as expensive beauty products.
