Salt has been used traditionally for many years in bathing. Here is an interesting twist to an old favourite.

Ingredients

  • 250 grams Rock Salts
  • 100 grams Epsom Salts
  • 100 grams Iodised Salt
  • Flower Petals
  • Essential Oils

Method

1. Mix together your salts.

2. Add your flower petals - as many or as few as you like. These flowers will float around you as you lie in the bath. Creating a wonderfully luxuriant experience. If you don’t like the thought of flower petals being washed down the drain, then maybe you could use these salts to make Bath Tea Bags.

3. Next you add your essential oil. You can match up your oils to your flower petals, or mix and match them to create your own heavenly scent.

4. Now it is simply a matter of throwing some into a warm bath and laying back to relax and unwind in your very own homemade bath salts!

Why Salts?

Bath salts have been used in many varying form for many, many years. It is possible Hippocrates started this trend by recommending that patients be immersed in the sea to treat some illnesses and diseases. But each type of salt can bring its own benefits.

  • Rock salt - both rock and normal sea salt can be used with the same effect. Rock salt has been chosen in this recipe merely for its interesting texture which can add to the visual appeal of the bath salts. Sea salt has many reputed benefits. The most common include tension relief and as a treatment for skin ailments. Salt is also very good at healing and reducing the redness associated with fresh scar tissue. Sea salt has also been used to treat: arthritis, insect bites, psoriasis, athlete’s foot and foot calluses.
  • Epsom salts - are so named for the town in England in which they were first distilled from water. This distillation results in magnesium sulphate which we now more commonly know as Epsom salts. There are many properties that can be attributed to Epsom salts, but the most common include relief from tension and aching muscles. Epsom salts, like all the relating salts, can also help to clean and heal minor wounds.
  • Iodised salt - Iodised salt helps to prevent the instance of goitre, but there is little evidence to suggest that bathing in this salt will assist in the treatment of this condition. Ironically, there has been some evidence that, in large doses, iodised salt may actually contribute to a type of goitre which occurs due to a high hormone level. But once again, this salt is excellent in the treatment of stress and muscle relaxation.

So there you have it, quick to make and all natural, these bath salts are sure to be a winner.
