Here is a novel atternative to bath bombs for the bath. These all natural tea bags are fun and easy to make.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Bicarbonate of Soda (baking soda)
- 1 cup Citric Acid (lemon juice)
- 1 cup Rock Salts
- Essential Oil
- Dried Flower Petals
- Large empty tea bags
Method
- Mix the bicarbonate of soda and citric acid together. This is was causes your tea bag to foam when it hits the water. This reaction is caused because bicarbonate of soda is what is called in scientific terms a "base". Citric acid is an "acid". When this base and acid come into contact with water, a chemical reaction occurs and CO2 (carbon dioxide) is the result. It is this CO2 that you see bubbling frantically to the surface
- Add the flower petals. Unlike Bath Bombs, more flower petals can be added to teabags. This is because the tea bag encases the ingredients and therefore does not need a certain ratio of dry to wet ingredients to cause it to stay together on its own accord. So go wild; any petals will work. Or try a blend of different petals. The perennial favourites include flowers such as lavender, rose and chamomile
- Now you need to scent the tea bags. You can use you favourite essential oil here, or combine different ones to create your own original scent. Rose is an old favourite scent, but try combining chamomile flower petals with the essential oils of chamomile and black pepper to help relieve sore muscles and relax the mind.
- You need to fill the tea bags now. This is where it becomes apparent why it is important to use large tea bags. Don’t be tempted to save money and get the smaller ones. Small ones are just fine for tea, but when rock salt and flower petals are thrown into the mix, it becomes too bulky to iron shut in the smaller tea bags. Spoon in your ingredients until each bag is half to three quarters full. If you over fill the tea bags at this stage, you will not be able to properly iron them shut. Set your iron onto a low setting and gently iron the opening closed.
Now your tea bags are ready to use. Over time they will react with the essential oils in them and harden, but this does not ruin the product. When they are added to the bath they will not only scent the water and relax you as you soak, but they will gently foam as the Bicarbonate of soda and citric acid react to the water. Alternatively, you could fill your tea bags with a bath salts mixture.
