Lemon is a mild, yet effective green cleaner. Lemon juice can be used for non-toxic house cleaning as a mild de-greaser and whitener. What’s more, the acid content in lemon is an effective antibacterial against most household bacteria. Read on to learn how to green clean with lemon.

  • To get rid of dishwasher odor, place a cup of lemon juice in the bottom of an emptied-out dishwasher, and then run the rinse cycle. The lemon will deodorize and disinfect the dishwasher.
  • Get rid of rust using lemon juice. Halve a lemon and rub it against the affected area, leave it for 30 minutes and then clean it off. Instead of rubbing with a halved lemon, you may squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the rusty area instead and clean it off with a clean cloth. For an even more potent cleaner, sprinkle salt over the lemon’s cut surface or add it to the lemon juice.
  • Add a cup of lemon juice to your load of dishes during the rinse cycle to cut grease and disinfect the dishes while adding a sparkle to your glassware.
  • Make a paste of lemon juice and borax in the consistency of peanut butter. Use this as a scrubber for surfaces around your home. Borax is a natural green cleaner in its own right, so this cleaning paste offers the combined cleaning power of both lemon and borax.
  • Use lemon juice to get rid of hard water stains. The acid content in the juice works by neutralizing the alkaline content of the hard water build up.
  • Clean your drains with lemon juice, especially if you have a septic system. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain, followed by hot lemon juice. After a few minutes, rinse with hot water. Toss a lemon or lemon peels into your garbage disposal and grind it to help get rid of odors and keep it smelling fresh.
  • Slice a lemon and rub this over the surface of your chopping block to disinfect and deodorize it. Squeeze some lemon juice over any tough stains on the board, let this sit for about 10 minutes and then wipe it away.
  • Make a gentle disinfectant cleaner for kitchen and bathroom by mixing equal parts lemon juice and water into a spray bottle. This is also a great window and mirror cleaner
  • Freshen and deodorize your microwave with lemon. Place a few slices of lemon into a bowl of water. Heat it on high for 30 to 45 seconds and then wipe it down. .
  • Scrub away mildew and mold from tile and other surfaces using a paste made from equal parts lemon juice and salt.
  • Neutralize the smell of vinegar by adding a small amount of lemon to your vinegar-based house-cleaners.

Lemon and lemon juice both offer a fragrant, refreshing non-toxic alternative to chemical-based cleaning products.
