If you own a lot of beautiful wooden furniture, it's important to maintain it properly using an all-natural beeswax furniture polish you make yourself.

Simply dusting your wood furniture will not preserve its natural beauty – you will need to nurture the wood with a good furniture polish. You can make your own using all natural products such as beeswax and essential oils. Using your own homemade all-natural and fragrant furniture polish works a treat on all wood surfaces whether old or new. Used regularly, it will nourish your wooden furniture and give it a wonderfully deep lustre and preserve the wood for years to come.

To make the polish, you will need natural beeswax, a little pure turpentine, and the light scent of your favourite essential oil such as lavender for the furniture in the bedrooms and lemon for the rest of the house.

There are two ways to make the polish. One involves using your stove and takes less than 30 minutes to make while the second method takes a few days but involves no heat. Both methods produce a rich, creamy polish that you can scent with your favourite essential oil.

Where to Buy Supplies

Pure turpentine can by bought at art supply and hardware stores. Beeswax and essential oils are available at health food stores and some craft stores. Be sure that both are 100% pure products, not synthetics.

Method A: Stove Method

Ingredients and materials

  • 75 g (3 oz) beeswax
  • 200 ml (1/3 pint) spirits of gum turpentine
  • 100% pure essential oil bowl
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Glass, metal or ceramic bowl
  • Shallow metal, ceramic or glass container

Instructions

  1. Place beeswax into a bowl and set it over simmering water until the wax melts.
  2. Add the turpentine and stir thoroughly.
  3. Add 30 drops of essential oil and stir.
  4. Pour into a pretty container and allow cooling and solidifying before using.

Method B: Non-heating Method

Ingredients and materials

  • 75 gm (3 oz) natural beeswax
  • 200 ml (1/3 pint) pure spirits of gum turpentine
  • 100% pure essential oil
  • Coarse grater
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Large screw-top glass jar with lid
  • Shallow metal or glass container

Instructions

  1. Grate the beeswax into the screw top glass jar.
  2. Pour the turpentine over the grated beeswax and replace the lid.
  3. Leave in sunny spot for a few days, stirring the mixture daily until the wax has softened and blended with the turpentine to form a smooth cream.
  4. Add 30 drops of essential oil to scent, stir to mix, and then decant into a pretty metal, glass, or ceramic container.

To Apply Polish

Apply your polish using a soft cloth, then leave for a few minutes before buffing to a soft sheen with another clean soft cloth..
