A shopping day with friends can be a fabulous experience filled with luxuries. No strategy, no budget, just a day filled with fitting rooms and lattes.

In today's economy and growing personal awareness of each person's affect on the earth, it's smart to take a little more time to consider the impact of purchases both on budget and the environment. Here are 5 ways to shop smart in today’s fluctuating economy and fragile environment.

Go Vintage – Shopping vintage is my favorite green shopping trend. It’s one that ‘in the know’ fashionistas have known about for years. You can stumble on marvelous deals by going to your local thrift or vintage shops. Check out CitySearch.com and type in keyword vintage clothing and choose your city to find shops near you.

Go consignment – Follow these instructions:

  • Walk into your closet with a shopping bag.
  • Choose at least 8 things that are in good condition, which you have not worn in at least 2 years (and know that you won’t – be honest)
  • Take the bag into your nearest consignment store
  • Take the profits and put into savings…OR find something new that you will love and where
  • Repeat often

Swap with friends – We all have clothing that would look better on our dear friends. This includes things you love but simply don’t wear any longer. Wouldn’t it be lovely to pass these items on to a beloved pal? Invite several friends over and ask them to bring 5-10 items that they love but just collect dust in their closet. Make it into a girl’s night, share a bottle of organic wine, dish out some yummies, and share share share. You’re bound to have some laughs trying on each others' clothing. And, you will each walk away with a sense of giving a new existence to a treasured item. What a way to bond.

Plan a community swap – In these wacky economic times, it’s a bit tough for some to simply go shopping for the next size of kids clothing. Get together with several families in your area and bring seasonal clothing that the kids (and you) have outgrown. This way, you can find the next size up for your wee ones, and pass on stuff that no longer fits. Some swaps have even included hubbies or partner’s clothing that was outdated, or not worn. It always finds a good home. All that is left over can be donated to a local charity, or homeless shelter.

Just wait – Imagine this conversation. One co-worker, says, "Hey tomorrow is the big Thanksgiving Day sale at Best Buy, do you want to come and stand in line at 5am and get some good deals?” To which the other co-worker replies, “Is there something specific you need?” The reply is a giggle, “No…but I’m sure I’ll find something I can’t live without.”

Zen Wrap Up- There is always one more holiday sale, one more perfect shirt, pair of shoes, lipstick and [fill in your desire here]. Why not just not buy it this time? Instead, write a note to a friend you’ve lost touch with, re-read a loved book, or maybe crack open those art supplies again and dust them off. These things are the things that will satisfy your soul.
